Like every other living human being, I had no choice in my arrival on the planet. But our parents did make the choice (good or bad) which resulted in our arrival; hopelessly unprepared, weak and dependent, unlike the young of many animals. We need to be carefully raised, constantly protected, and provided with nutrition and support for many years until we can fully function as adults. This process usually results in responsible and accountable citizens who often acquire a job, a partner, children, pets and a house, but not necessarily in that order. Today, this process is changing, as individuals make alternative decisions – such as remaining single, choosing to be self-employed rather than simply ‘getting a job’ and moving around the world – to a much greater degree than those individuals born a few decades earlier.
From a very young age, I dreamt of my future life. Some of my dreams have come true and others not. In my mid-forties I had a major dream: I decided to leave South Africa to start a new life in New Zealand. This decision is just one of many I made in my life – some good, some bad. I am now looking back over the years, and at many of those decisions, evaluating them and reflecting on the consequences they’ve had on my life. My final decision will concern my own death and its timing. This blog is an opportunity to tell my story and in doing so to explain why I believe I’ve led a ‘completed life’. Although I do not see my life as extraordinary, others have said that it is one full of ‘living’ and thus worth sharing to prove that no-one needs to be rich or famous to live a rich, rewarding, fulfilled and completed life. Please enjoy browsing through the blog, some thought-provoking content and the many photo's in the Travel albums.
